handling collisions in game or via Box2D.XNA

I'm new to Box2D (and Box2D.XNA).  I've been going through the documentation found at since I couldn't find anything else.


Here is my question:

In my game, I already have the collisions working.  Does the physics engine need its own collision detection or can it some how use what I already built?  

Or even better is if I could do more detailed collision detection after the physics engine thinks it collided to ensure the object collided.
